Visa & Entry

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so Tanzanian entry rules apply. Visa requirements depend on your nationality. The standard Ordinary Visa is currently USD 50 and valid for up to 90 days; U.S. passport holders travelling for tourism use the Multiple Visa.

Always check your passport nationality and current requirements on the official Immigration portal before travelling.

Mandatory Insurance

Zanzibar's inbound travel insurance is mandatory for foreign visitors, even if you already have another travel or medical policy. Current official cost: USD 44 per adult and USD 22 per child. Fees can change.

Use the official Zanzibar portal only. Avoid third-party insurance websites.

Vaccines & Health

There is no single vaccine rule that applies to every traveller: requirements can depend on where you are arriving from or have transited. Keep routine vaccinations up to date and ask a travel clinic about recommended vaccines and malaria prevention for your personal itinerary.

Yellow-fever documentation can depend on your country of origin or transit. Check the latest official requirements before departure.

Health advice is personal. Speak with a doctor or travel clinic ideally several weeks before travelling.

What to Pack

  • Light, breathable clothing and swimwear
  • High-SPF sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Comfortable sandals / shoes
  • Universal power adapter & power bank
  • Personal medication and copies of documents
  • Light clothing covering shoulders/knees for villages and Stone Town

Leave ordinary plastic carrier bags at home

Tanzania restricts plastic carrier bags. Specific exceptions exist, including some packaging and zip-lock bags used for toiletries.

Where to Stay

Choose the coast according to the holiday you actually want, not just the hotel.

PajeRestaurants · beach bars · parties · kite · social atmosphere. Best fit if you want to be out and about.
JambianiLong beach · restaurants · local atmosphere · more relaxed than Paje, while staying close to the South-East scene.
Bwejuu / MichamviQuieter · nature · couples · relaxation, with the South-East within reach.
Nungwi / KendwaBeach · swimming · resorts · sunsets · excursions. Choose it mainly for sea and beach, not because you expect a Paje-style party scene.
Kiwengwa / North-EastResorts · families · quieter holidays. Good if you plan to spend more time inside your resort.
Stone TownHistory · culture · markets · food. Great for a day visit or 1–2 nights rather than a beach base.
Remember the tides: on the East and South-East coast the ocean can retreat dramatically at low tide. Nungwi and Kendwa are generally less affected for swimming.

Taxi & Private Transfer

The easiest option for airport transfers, dinners, excursions and nights out. Agree on the price before leaving when using an independent taxi.

Rent a Car

A good choice if you want independence and plan to explore different parts of the island. Zanzibar drives on the left. Make sure the rental provider arranges/checks the locally required driving documentation.

Scooter

Convenient for shorter distances. Wear a helmet and be particularly careful at night: road lighting can be limited and you may encounter pedestrians, bicycles, animals and uneven road surfaces.

Quad / ATV

For an island adventure or a different way to explore, see the quad options already available through Essence Zanzibar.

When to Come to Zanzibar

There is no single perfect month. Choose according to the kind of trip you want.

June → OctoberDrier, comfortable weather. One of the easiest periods for beach holidays and exploring the island.
December → FebruaryHotter, sunnier and tropical. Excellent for a warm beach escape, with peak-season demand around Christmas and New Year.
March → MayThe main rainy period. April and May are generally the months we would least recommend if your priority is reliable beach weather.
NovemberShort rains can occur, often mixed with sunny periods. Weather is more variable, but it does not automatically mean rain all day.
For kitesurfing, wind conditions matter as much as rainfall. Check the season and forecast close to your trip.

Culture & Respect

Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Beachwear is normal at beaches and resorts, but in villages and Stone Town choose more respectful clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people.

Drones

Do not simply arrive and fly a drone. TCAA requires permits and registration for drone operations; non-residents should arrange the required import, registration and operations approvals before travelling.

Emergency

In a serious emergency, contact the appropriate local emergency service, your hotel/host and your travel insurer. Keep your passport details and insurance documents accessible.

Emergency services and contact numbers can change. Essence assistance is a travel-help contact and does not replace police, ambulance, medical or consular services.
